In 2007, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducted the second National Survey of Mental Health and Well-being. The survey involved approximately 8,800 people aged over 16 years and living in private dwellings in all states and territories of Australia.

  • Prevalence: Almost one in five Australians in the last 12 month period.

  • Mix: 14.4% Anxiety, substance abuse 5.1% and 4.1% depression

  • Biggest work cause: Overworked

  • Highest in younger people - 26%

  • Those with a mental disorder averaged being away 15% of the time

  • Vulnerable groups: The young, indigenous, rural, unemployed

  • 3 of the biggest things that help: Exercise, inclusive policies, asking/listening

  • Positive mental health: High coping, good relationships

  • Mentally healthy companies are MORE PRODUCTIVE
